Challenges:

  1. Identifying a unique interpretation of thresholds using Middle Spaces.

  2. Analysis of people's behavior in the thresholds and the elements that affect their attitude.

  3. A brief analysis of thresholds' elements in the Plateau-Mont-Royal.

  4. Phenomenological approach for understanding the role of thresholds in the dwellers' lifestyle.

Concept

The Wiseman has four major elements that are all connected to each other: Light, Brain, Gold, and Knowledge.

Light: It is a symbol of brightness and intelligence in the path of our life. In many stories, people believe that light can move us from ignorance to wisdom, or from nowhere to the destination. This is why I call this artwork WISEMAN because the series of elements inside this work teach us the things that lead to pure brain performance.

Brain: It is an organ that we think with it, we decide, we work, we choose, and we move with it. It is the place that words form and then affect by our mouth on the others. It is the resource of wisdom or ignorance, so the more we read or explore the surroundings the wiser our brains become. Brain choose that we want to be positive in this world or negative with the data that we put inside it, so nurturing it will affect the direction of our decision. It is the most incredible and complicated creation in this world, it can create or even destroy.

Gold: It is one of the most valuable elements in the world. It will be earned by money, but I believe words are more valuable from gold, how the words can affect our lives. When we are talking to a wise person, how his or her words can change our lives, and that change could change

Knowledge: The book is a resource for knowledge. In the past, books located just in the king’s library because they could be a risk for their kingdom. Books move people from idiotism to wisdom so it was harmful to a dynasty, it could give a sense of revolutionary to people, but now there are several books that could change our lives. Words in books came from different brains with different knowledge and information.

Execution

cTavish street is located in downtown Montreal right beside McGill University, connecting the Sherbrooke street in the southern part, to the Mount Royal in the north side of it. This street became a car-free zone in 2010 since then there are not many changes as for creating a public space or connecting the people to nature. Mount Royal is located in the north part of this street, but there is not any footprint of the nature of the mountain in the road. Inside the street, all the buildings have glass and concrete façade and lack of sustainable material is a weakness for the area. The main concern in this project was designing a different kind of public space in the area for the people who use the street for going to the library or entering Mount Royal. The main purpose of the design was to make a pause for people who walk through the street by resting here or using the café for relaxation. People use this street to enter the library or Mount Royal. I designed this box with three trees but I planted four trees to support the eco-system and showing respect to the environment.

History: McTavish street is located in downtown Montreal right beside McGill University, connecting the Sherbrooke street in the southern part, to the Mount Royal in the north side of it. This street hosts many students for coming to McGill University and people who are trying to reach Mount Royal from the south part of it. Also, this street is one of the hubs which connects Mount Royal to the downtown as a walkable space. In May 2010 the lower part of the street became a car-free zone, so now it is the best opportunity to define public space in this zone and try to invite people to use this unique space. The city and the University call for greening the street with additional shrubs and trees. This street is full of building with concrete façade, so, a space with wooden material would be impressive for the people and the city. the available site has two benches and two trees nearby, the decision is replacing them inside the mentioned space and add two other benches under the trees for the using the shadows in the summer, so we will double the trees and sitting area. In addition, students should take a long walk for finding a café or buffet for buying coffee or snacks when they are in the McLennan library which is a place where many students spend their time inside it. Moreover, people who do running and walking inside this path, ended in this zone, normally tired of the exercise, so the resting area would be a delightful finish line for them.

Projects: A wooden road in McTavish street, right beside McGill university a place where there are history and a university. Every day many people visit this space. One of the main elements of McGill University when staying in McTavish street is the view of the Mont-Royal which gave a unique identity to this place. Wood is a local material in Montreal, but we cannot see many wooden public spaces in the city as thermowood furniture. In this project, the main concern was how we could define a wooden space in the area full of concrete and glass.
